Individual Relationship & Communication Therapy in Littleton and Throughout Colorado
Maybe you learned to avoid conflict, keep your feelings to yourself, or go along with what other people want. You might tell yourself it’s not a big deal, try to let things go, or hope things will work themselves out. Sometimes those ways of handling things stop working. You may find yourself getting frustrated or resentful, having the same arguments over and over, or feeling like your needs aren’t being heard.
Maybe you’re in a relationship that has gotten harder to navigate, or becoming a parent has brought some of these issues to the surface. You may be realizing it’s time to better understand your emotions and what’s underneath them, so you can communicate more openly and build a healthier relationship with your partner.
Learning to understand what you’re feeling.
It can be hard to know what you’re feeling when you’ve spent a long time pushing your emotions aside. Maybe you learned that anger was something to avoid, that being upset meant you were being difficult, or that it was easier to just keep the peace.
We’ll work on understanding your emotions and what they may be telling you. From there, we can work on figuring out what you need and how to actually say it. This may mean practicing difficult conversations, setting boundaries, or learning how to express yourself without shutting down or blowing up.
Building more honest relationships.
It can feel scary to really sit with your emotions, especially when you’re worried that being honest will upset your partner, create conflict, or hurt your relationship. You may find yourself wanting to fix things quickly, move on, or push your feelings aside instead. We’ll work on getting more comfortable with your emotions and learning how to navigate them without feeling like you have to immediately fix or get rid of them. We’ll also work on communication and healthy boundaries so you can be more honest about what you need and build more secure, connected relationships. As you become more comfortable with your own emotions, you may also find that you feel more free to be yourself and make choices that feel right for you.
