Children are very resilient. Humans are adaptable, and with a combination of those two things, it’s surprising what we can survive. Sometimes what is the hardest is not the big events, but the small ways we felt alone, unsupported, or unseen by our caregivers.
As adaptable creatures, we learned to survive in these environments by changing our behaviors, masking our emotions, and learning to handle things on our own. These strategies worked. They helped us get through what we were experiencing at the time. But now that we are older, many of these patterns can become less helpful and may make it harder to deeply connect with others, trust ourselves, and feel secure in our relationships. Sometimes being in relationships highlights these patterns and brings awareness to the things we want to understand or do differently. For others, the idea of getting close to someone can feel scary, and maintaining relationships can feel difficult. Parenting can also bring these patterns to the surface. Raising children can feel like a mirror, reflecting back the areas where we struggle, as well as creating a motivation to better understand ourselves and make changes.
Understanding these patterns can help us have more compassion for ourselves and recognize that our reactions did not come out of nowhere. They were shaped by our experiences and the ways we learned to protect ourselves.
